Wikipedia
You may have noticed that when I link to any resources in my blog posts they are mostly pointing to a Wikipedia article. Many of you will be aware of Wikipedia but for those people who do not know what Wikipedia is, then let me fill you in.
Wikipedia was founded by Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales in 2001. The goal of Wikipedia was to create a publicly editable encyclopaedia. Since then Wikipedia has hit three million articles according to the Guardian News. The reason why I love Wikipedia so much is because it’s one of the most successful comunity projects out there. Also the idea of having infomation free to any one with an internet connection without advertising is such a commendable premise. With this in mind I believe that the founders should get the Nobel peace prize or something on those lines. The only problem with Wikipedia is that academics distrust it because of the editable content. However I find that if you use the references at the bottom of any Wikipedia article, you can use those to get you started on any research.
Overall Wikipedia is one of those projects that shows why the internet was created. Long may it live.
